Common diagnoses, minus the jargon
What these conditions actually are, in plain language. Each summary will grow into a full guide. Educational only: none of this replaces evaluation by a licensed clinician.
Depression
More than sadness: weeks of low energy, lost interest, and changed sleep and self-worth. Highly treatable.
Anxiety Disorders
When worry becomes constant, outsized, and hard to control. Includes generalized anxiety, panic, and phobias.
Bipolar Disorder
Episodes of depression and elevated mood that affect energy, judgment, and sleep. Stability is achievable with care.
PTSD & Trauma
The nervous system’s lasting response to overwhelming events: intrusive memories, avoidance, feeling on guard.
ADHD
Differences in attention, impulse control, and executive function. Present from childhood, often into adulthood.
OCD
Intrusive, unwanted thoughts paired with rituals meant to relieve them. Far more than a preference for tidiness.
Schizophrenia & Psychosis
Changes in perception and thinking, such as hallucinations or fixed beliefs. Early care improves outcomes.
Substance Use Disorders
A medical condition, not a moral failing: compulsive use despite harm, with effective treatments available.
